Fuller on Moulin Rouge

I decided to read and write about Fuller's article on Moulin Rouge, since it is definitely interesting and echos similar thoughts that I had while viewing the film. Even the title, "Strictly Red" is something that stuck with me, as I couldn't help but notice the use of red as a motif throughout the entire film, from the opening curtain, to Satine's dress, to all of the reds in the Moulin Rouge night club. He asks if this movie revives the modern musical, and if this movie has staying power, regardless of how successful it is. Obviously, it did end up being very successful. It is such a unique film, because although it does fall in categories like "romance", "arthouse", and "musical", it combines all of these elements to make it very different. Fuller also says that the film can be viewed as a psychological quest, showing that there are so many ways to view the film. The balance of comedy/drama, dark/light, and the unique gliding cinematography and chaotic pace make it something to remember, even if it doesn't end up universally loved.
