Chapter 4- Cinematography

Without Toland, a veteran cinematographer, Citizen Kane would not have been able to be the movie it became. Toland use his artistic and rule breaking cinematography tricks on his previous movies, but tied in with the Citizen Kane plot is what made it a big hit. As we mentioned in class of the artist personality coming out in the films, the article reiterates that the “atmosphere [between Welles and Toland] continued to characterize their relationship throughout the production.” I hadn’t noticed till I read in the article that Welles recognized Toland’s contributions and put their names together in the films credits. This chapter gave me a better sense of why Citizen Kane is such a famous film. It described to me the hard work and effort as well as new techniques that we used in that time.
