This article walks the reader through a specific series of twelve shots in the Big Sleep. It was an interesting read because I had no idea that twelve specific shots that weren't necessarily packed full of action could be so important for the narration of the film. Textual Analysis is very detailed (almost too detailed) way of looking at a film. The Obvious and the Code unpacks a series of shots between Marlowe and Vivian where the distribution of characters, the timing of the shots, and the type of shots that appear on screen effect the way the sequence is perceived by viewers. What's most interesting about this analysis is that the sequence it discusses happens between two huge events in the film, but the segment itself doesn't add to these scenes other than the fact that Marlowe and Vivian tell the other they're in love with them.
