The Big Sleep

Before reading The Obvious and the Code I was not aware of the amount of repetition in the scene. To me it flowed well and was a scene that stood out but I hadn’t taken the time to analyze why. First, all twelve shots in the scene opened and closed on lap dissolve. Second there is repetition between shots. There are shots going back and forth of Marlowe and of Vivian. Some of these shots have dialoged and some are quiet but every shot has a character in it. Third, both Marlowe and Vivian state “I guess I am in love with you.”  With this repetition, it shows unity of the scene. I was impressed and surprised at how much effort went into theses scenes and how little changes can make such a big impact.
